EXPIRATION DATE
Directors Statement
The title of this project originated from an internet slang term that defines menopause as a woman’s "expiration date". When I first saw this term online, I was struck by a sense of irony because of my experience losing my period to anorexia. I was perplexed by the notion that the standards of youth and beauty that name a woman expired once she is unable to reproduce are the same standards that normalize and encourage disordered eating behaviors, causing many women to prematurely lose their periods.
Ultimately, I hope this project will encourage women to shift their scrutiny away from their own bodies and begin to examine the ways in which vanity is simultaneously shamed and reinforced in our society. This project relates to my aspiration to create narratives that inspire others, especially young people, to interrogate our sociopolitical reality.
