Directors Statement
The title of this project originated from an internet slang term that defines menopause as a woman’s "expiration date". When I first saw this term online, I was struck by a sense of irony because of my experience losing my period to anorexia. I was perplexed by the notion that the same standards of youth and beauty that may deem a woman "expired" once she is unable to reproduce also normalize and encourage disordered eating behaviors that cause many women to lose their periods prematurely.
Ultimately, I hope this project will encourage women to shift their scrutiny away from their own bodies and examine the ways in which vanity is simultaneously shamed and reinforced in our society. This project relates to my aspiration to create narratives that inspire others, especially young people, to interrogate our sociopolitical reality.
