Continuing Conversations
with Jamai
Jamai is a close friend and a creative counterpart. He is also the first person I pitched this project to. After our initial conversation, I refined my concept for the studio, and he formulated a concept for his session...
"For my shoot, I really wanted to reflect how I felt in this life. Ppl thought I was disappearing, anonymous, or just not present, and I felt like that. But it was more, I was buried. Buried under all my interests, my research. I was deep in books and magazines, and spurred on my creativity. I was discovering a whole new world within myself, and the lens that allowed me to see clarity was the books and studies that captivated me, hence why much face isn’t directly visible in some photos. Hence why my face was buried so deep"
If you had to give yourself a creative title, what would it be?
I give myself titles when I’m actually doing something. In the morning, when I wake up, I’m Jamai. I don’t become a stylist until I’m styling somebody. I don’t become an art director until I’m directing something or conceptualizing it. I’m Jamai 100% of the time. And that’s the only label that I subscribe to.
